Helmets Save lives, dogs on landings don’t!

Format Image

What a week!

Good Friday my brother came down for Rossland for family easter. Friday we planned to go somewhere to bike but weather kept us here in Lethbridge. We were out riding with some friends hitting all the usual trails. On our way over to the uni trail, we stopped at dead fall to play around on the jumps and drops. My brother and I were hitting the fun little drop that has been there forever. I hit it once then our friend wanted to take some photos of my brother and I hitting the drop. After my brother hit it, I got the clear to go and started pedaling towards the drop and at the last possible second, I noticed my friends dog was sitting on the landing. I slammed on my breaks and slid off the end of the drop and took the hole fall straight to my head on the back side of the landing.

I thank IXS trail helmet for saving my life, I hit so hard I damaged my back. While in the ER after X-rays, CT scan and 5 hours later I got the clear that I didn’t break anything in my back just royally messed it up.

2016 Recap!

Format Image

Wow what a year, it started off rough starting in September 2015. Being laid off, then my Dad had a heart attack, and finally my 11 relationship changing and ending. (this was a good thing for both of us). Then 2016 rolled in and everything changed!

I was riding as an ambassador for Giant Bicycles, Swagman Racks, Ever Rider Wheels. I got an awesome new job doing marketing and helping people, and I got to plan a bike trip out to Whistler, Bought a 14 foot 1976 camping trailer to drag to ski hills in the summer to ride bikes and have a great sleep.

So to say the least I got to do lots of riding with my 2 new bikes, rode in some new places and road new trails in old places. 2016 has been a great year once it got started in march for me. I can’t wait to see what 2017 will bring.

With my new job, I got to go hiking for work and be in the outdoors doing what I love just being in the mountains. If it’s biking, camping, hiking and pretty much anything in the outdoors.

Here is photos and videos to recap my 2016

Why M43 cameras has change my photos

I have been shooting photos for a while I picked up my first SLR back in 2004 a good ol’ Pentax MZ-50. I started shooting action. Here are some images I managed to find on my old www.pinkbike.com profile.

When I enter College I managed to pick up a Canon Rebel XT. I started shooting more due to digital was cheaper to shoot and instate photo developing. I shot lots. Learned lots. I have owned lots of camera gear from 2004 till now 2015. Rufly around 10 camera bodies and lots of lens. But nothing really stuck and mad me want to bring these heavy large bodies and lenses with me all the time. Then in February 2015 an Olympus camera showed up in my Facebook feed. The OM-D EM 5 MKII. See my past blog about the switch.

This camera is awesome. I have been taking it with me on every bike ride and it has been changing the way I shoot.

OMG I went OM-D

When I was shooting weddings every weekend I had a Nikon D700 and A Nikon D7000. Hand in had awesome cameras. The needs changed when I left the full time photographer roll to work a 9-5 and have more time for myself and my family. I switched to smaller lighter(ish) cameras to shoot video and photo at the flick of a switch. Rocking a D7100 and  a D7000. Things were lighter kinda. Getting back to my roots of action sport photography I needed a light fast kit. When I left home and my jeep I left behind all my flashes lens and kept things simple. Nikon D7100 no grip, Sigma 18-35 1.8, Bower 8mm 3.8,YN-560 III, and a RF-603 NII. This was minimal and I shot some awesome stuff without breaking my back while riding or hiking. Then February  happened. This Olympus OM-D eM5 MKII came out. I have been looking for a smaller rangefinder type camera for a better part of a year now. Nothing had really fast flash Sync speeds, video performance 1080/720 @ 60p.

M43 or Micro 4/3’s is a small sensor but bigger than a point and shoot camera.

This is the Olympus OM-D M5 MK II. with the Olympus 12-40 2.8 Pro Lens Dust and Splash Proof.

What sold me on this system was the 5 axis IS. Check out this video all hand held.

So I will now shed weight and size but not performance.

16.1mp is not the best but I have shot on a Nikon D2H that was only 4 mp and a Canon Rebel that was only 6mp. I am not a pixel snob but… the M5 MKII can shoot a 40mp image so there is that.

I was really worried that my YONGNUO RF-603 NII would not work, but there is a small hack for it and they work great I have seen online people syncing to almost 1/350th.

To the kit

M.Zuiko ED 12-40 2.8 pro (24-80 equivalent)

M.Zuiko ED 40-150 2.8 pro (80-300 equivalent)

Rokinon 7.5 3.5 (15mm equivalent)

All my flash work with this camera so my lighting kit will work. It’s funny though my flashes are bigger than the camer.

With me shooting a few weddings this year and quite a bit of action sport photo and video and the stuff I shoot for work this system is great for me needs now. And its all new gear who can say no to new toys.

Here is my Nikon D7100 with no grip with the sigma 18-35 1.8 to the left and to the right is the EM5-MK2 with the M.Zuiko 12-40 2.8. I am very happy with the size difference.

I will have some photo out once Camera RAW updates to the new cameras that have come out.

Rant done,

Being a Photographer and making my living doing it from 2007 till the middle of 2012 makes it strange to look back at the last 2 years and notice I have only picked up my camera because I wanted to not because I had too. Inspired by my friend Justin Blog post HERE. Here is my 2014.

Strobis Gear

If you know me at all about a month and a bit ago I had a large amount of my camera gear stolen. It sucked, heaving some one break into your car and take all your camera gear that you have been accumulating for over 10 years sucks.

Strobis what is strobist ? here is a link to there site http://www.strobist.blogspot.ca/. To make is short it is off camera lighting with minimal gear mainly with speed lights.

I started out using a Nikon D200 with a Nikon SB200 with Nikons Creative Lighting System. It works well but has it glitches. Then I bought some cactus triggers. They worked about 70% of the time. I up graded by using a friend pocket wizards. They are the stander in off camera lighting and they work really well  but the down side in my opinion is they are big in size and big in price on average about $200+ each and you need 2 to fire one flash. Then I was ready to buy some wireless triggers myself. I didn’t want to buy wizards due to the big price tag and if you know me at all I am frugal I want the best bang for my buck. So I found Paul C Buff Cyber Syncs. Great price and awesome reviews. So went online and bought them to fire my 2 Nikon SB-800 and 2 SB-600’s. When I got them they worked awesome I had them for about 6 years with no problems whats so ever and I beat the crap out of them.

Now like I said my stuff got stolen. Do i buy Cyber Syncs again or find something new. I am trying to simplify my gear and lighten up my load. So what is out there? Yongnuo YN-560III Speed light’s with Yongnuo RF-603II Radio remotes. I got 3 Speed lights and 2 radio remotes off ebay for $272.34 shipped to my door. I could not buy on Nikon SB-900 flash for that.

So why the Japanese Speed lights and Radio Triggers . 1. price, your cant beat that 2. they work, i got to try and use this flash system in California while shooting with a clothing company. 3. your wires, turn the flashes one set them to wireless slide the radio on your camera and fire away. no cables no fuss.

I have not taken photos yet with my new speed light system but from the photo shoot in California so I know it works.

One thing I found out is that I can remotely fire my shutter with firing my Speed lights. This is something I tired to do with my Cyber Syncs and it never worked they way I wanted.

So my final conciliation By this flash and remote system. You wont be sorry. Once I have some time to shoot I will post my photos.
